“In terms of biological systems, efficiency is a matter of life or death. And the same is true in terms of business systems.” — Hendrith Smith

I have always been obsessed with efficiency. That means I want to get things done as quickly as possible and with the highest degree of accuracy.

But recently, I’ve come to understand that this attitude can be detrimental if it means I sacrifice my well-being. So, how do you find the right balance between coding and taking time to relax?

Here is what I’ve learned.

Learning from my mistakes

I used to be one of those coders who believed that working hard was all it took to be successful — the more hours, the better results.

However, that couldn’t have been further from the truth. After pushing myself too hard for too long, I eventually crashed.

My work suffered, and my mental health was in shambles. It was only then that I realized something had to change; I had to find a way to take care of myself while still being productive and efficient.
